BUFFALO, N.Y. – With playoff implications on the line in Wednesday evening's game against crosstown rival Daemen University, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team needed extra time but came away with a 9-8 victory.
The Saints (6-9, 3-2 ECC) were led offensively by
Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y.) with three goals while
Emily Fischer (Grand Island, N.Y.) and
Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) each added a pair of goals.
Sam Newlin (Austin, Texas) finished with two points (1 goal, 1 assist) with
Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y.) getting into the scoring column as well.
Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y.) got the offense started, winning five draw controls.
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y.) led the defense with five groundballs while Parker and
Lauren Smithers (Williamsville, N.Y.) each caused three turnovers.
Newlin got the scoring going for DYU at the 8:29 mark of the first quarter but the Wildcats answered back before the end of the frame. The Saints went on a 3-0 run with Handley scoring a pair of goals back-to-back capped off by a goal by Fischer to make it 4-1 with 8:29 left in the second quarter. Daemen answered, scoring a pair of goals before the break.
Coming out of the break, the Wildcats continued their hot scoring, scoring two goals to take the 5-4 lead with 8:45 left in the frame. Handley was able to square things up with a goal followed by a goal by Buck to make it 6-5. Daemen added on last goal in the third to make it 6-6 heading into the final quarter of regulation.
The Wildcats broke the tie once again but goals by Fischer and Bernas gave DYU the lead right back with just over four minutes left in regulation. Daemen was able to tie the game with 2:26 to force extra time.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Saints needed nearly the whole second overtime frame but a goal by Bernas proved to be the difference maker.
Stworzydlak went the distance in net, making 12 saves in the contest.
The Saints conclude the regular season this Saturday, April 27th, as they travel to the University of the District of Columbia at 11 a.m.
