Baseball Completes Sweep of Staten Island; Gets Program Record 22nd Win

NIAGARA FALLS, NY – The D'Youville University baseball team completed the four-game sweep over the College of Staten Island on Sunday with an 8-4 win.

The Saints picked up right where they left off on Saturday, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first. The first run came across on a wild pitch after three straight walks loaded the bases. Two more walks brought in another, as Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. Another wild pitch by the Dolphins' pitcher brought in the third run of the inning. Jon Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) then ripped an RBI single to make it 4-0. Ethan Hammond (Oakville, Ontario) followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-0. Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y.) drove in the sixth and final run of the inning with an RBI groundout.

DYU saw an opportunity to add on in the second inning after singles from Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) and Boucher, but they were unable to bring them in.

Alex Dzimian (Lakeview, N.Y.) shut down the Staten Island offense through the first five innings. After allowing a single and a walk in the first, Dzimian retired 11 straight batters through the fifth inning.

Two walks and three errors by the Saints led to three runs for the Dolphins in the top of the sixth to cut DYU's lead to 7-3. Staten Island tacked on one more in the top of the seventh to shrink the Saints' lead to three.

In the bottom of the eighth, after a leadoff single from Hunter Nowak (Hamburg, N.Y.), Jeremy Glinski (Sloan, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, and Boucher walked to load the bases. Simpson then drew a bases loaded walk to extend the Saints' lead to 8-4.

Sam Worthen shut the door on the Dolphins in the ninth inning to notch his tenth save of the year and secure DYU's 22nd win of the year, a new program record.
