14-Run Seventh Inning Propels Saints to Wild Win Over Staten Island

NIAGARA FALLS, NY – The D'Youville University baseball team defeated the College of Staten Island in a roller coaster game on Friday, beating the Dolphins by a score of 16-11.

After Staten Island took an early 1-0 lead off Saints' starting pitcher Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.), Jon Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) tied the game in the bottom of the second with his tenth home run of the season.

The Dolphins went back in front with five runs on six hits in the top of the fourth to take a 6-1 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning, Simpson went yard again to cut it to 6-2. In two at-bats, Simpson saw two pitches and homered on both.

Staten Island tacked on four more runs on four hits and one error to take a commanding 10-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Morris and Jeremy Glinski (Sloan, N.Y.) both singled to lead off the inning. Then, Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) launched a three-run homer to dead center to cut the deficit to 10-5. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) ripped a two-run single to cut the deficit to three. Morris and Glinski followed with base hits to drive in two more runs and make it 10-9. Boucher then sent a double down the left field line that scored two and put the Saints in front 11-10. Ethan Hammond (Oakville, Ontario) and Craig Oliver (Fredericton, New Brunswick) then each drove in two runs with a single and triple, respectively. DYU scored 14 runs on 11 hits in the inning and scored 11 runs with two outs to take a 16-10 lead.

Sam Worthen (Guelph, Ontario) closed out Staten Island in the top of the ninth and Zach Penner (Leamington, Ontario) got the winning decision, his second of the season.
