SPARKILL, N.Y. – Rounding out their weekend road trip, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team came away with the 18-12 win over St. Thomas Aquinas College Sunday afternoon.
The Saints (5-9, 2-2 ECC) were led offensively by the two-headed monster of
Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y.) and
Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y.) who each finished with nine points.
Sam Newlin (Austin, Texas) had four points (3 goals, 1 assist) with
Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) having three points (1 goal, 2 assists).
Danielle Gephart (Eden, N.Y.) rounded out the DYU contributions with two points (1 goal, 1 assist).
Emily Fischer (Grand Island, N.Y.) got the offense started, winning eight draw controls with
Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y.) winning seven draw controls.
Parker was also solid on the defensive end, grabbing six groundballs while causing three turnovers.
Addison Moore (Lancaster, N.Y.) was also a menace on the defensive end, causing three turnovers while grabbing three groundballs.
DYU started the game out strong, scoring the first four goals. Buck got the scoring started followed by a pair of goals by Handley and capped off by a goal by Gephart in the first eight minutes of action. The Spartans responded, scoring three straight goals to make it 4-3 with 3:14 left in the quarter. Handley helped the Saints gain the two-goal lead, scoring off the assist from Buck with 18 seconds before the end of the quarter.
The Saints continued the scoring to start the second quarter as Handley scored the woman-up goal off the dish from Bernas with 9:28 before the break. Bernas helped DYU get the four-goal advantage, scoring with 6:59 left in the quarter. The teams traded goals over the next two minutes of action before the Saints scored three unanswered. Newlin bookended the scoring with Handley scoring in the middle to make it 11-5. STAC was able to get one more back before halftime to make it 11-6.
Starting the second half, DYU came out firing as Handley added two goals to help push the lead out to seven. The Spartans tried to get back into the game, scoring three straight to make it 13-9 with 4:43 left in the third. The Saints closed the quarter out on a 3-1 run to make it 16-10, thanks in part to Buck with the three goals.
STAC scored a pair of goals to start the final frame of regulation but goals by Newlin and Buck helped keep the Spartans at bay.
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y.) went the distance in net, making seven saves.
The Saints will be off until Wednesday, April 24th, when they host Daemen University for their regular season home finale at 5 p.m.
