Women's Lacrosse Falls to Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – In the first of two road games, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team fell to Mercy University Friday afternoon by a score of 18-8.
 
The Saints (4-9, 1-2 ECC) were led offensively by Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y.) with three goals while Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y.) and Sam Newlin (Austin, Texas) each had two goals. Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) added one goal with Danielle Gephart (Eden, N.Y.) added two assists.
 
On the defensive end, DYU was led by Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y.) with six groundballs and three caused turnovers.
 
The Saints were able to get on the board first as Bernas just five minutes into the game. The Mavs were able to respond, scoring five unanswered goals spanning from the first quarter and the second quarter. DYU halted the run with back-to-back goals by Buck and Handley. Buck's goal was scored on a free position attempt at the 10:49 mark of the quarter with Handley's goal coming off the assist from Gephart to make it 5-3 with just over nine minutes until the break. Mercy went on a 4-0 run to close out the half to make it 9-3 going into the break.
 
Mercy continued to build upon their scoring run, scoring the first four goals of the second half. Handley ended the run, scoring her second goal of the contest on a free position attempt to make it 13-4 with 7:53 remaining in the third quarter. The Mavs responded once again, scoring five unanswered goals to help push their lead.
 
In the final quarter of action, the Saints offense was firing on all cylinders, scoring four goals. Newlin got the scoring spree started, scoring her first goal of the game at the 10:15 mark. Buck added her second goal of the game at the 7:46 mark off an assist from Grace Grosso (Hull, Mass.). Newlin scored her second goal of the contest soon after with Handley rounding out the scoring.
 
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y.) saw most the time in net, making 12 saves.
 
The Saints will have a quick turnaround as they travel to St. Thomas Aquinas College this Sunday, April 14th, for a 12 p.m. start.
