Women's Lacrosse Downed by No. 21 Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Facing another top team in the country, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team fell to No. 21 Saint Anselm College Saturday afternoon by a score of 19-6.
 
The Saints (4-7) were led offensively by Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y.) with three goals with Sam Newlin (Austin, Texas) finishing with two points (1 goal, 1 assist). Emily Fischer (Grand Island, N.Y.) and Sydney Gordon (Hamburg, N.Y.) each added a goal. Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y.) got the offense start, winning five draw controls.
 
Newlin led the defense, grabbing four groundballs and causing two turnovers.
 
Handley got the game's first goal of the day, scoring a the 12:09 mark of the first quarter. The Hawks answered, scoring the next two goals to take the 2-1 lead. Fischer answered, tying the game with her woman-up goal at the 9:21 mark of the frame. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the quarter with Newlin and Gordon scoring the other two DYU goals to take a 4-4 game into the second quarter.
 
Saint Anselm started the second quarter strong, scoring four unanswered goals to take the 8-4 lead. Handley halted the run, scoring at the 8:17 mark of the second quarter to make it 8-5. The hawks went on another run to close out the half, taking a 12-5 lead into the break.
 
The offense spurt continued for the Hawks, gaining a 16-5 lead coming at the start of the fourth quarter. Handley once again halted the run, scoring on the woman-down opportunity off the assist from Newlin for the team's final goal of the game.
 
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y.) went the distance in net, making 12 saves on the day.
 
The Saints will be back in action next Saturday, April 6th, as they host No. 25 Roberts Wesleyan University at 11 a.m.
