Women's Lacrosse Downed by the Falcons

RINDGE, N.H. – Heading up north for the first of two road games, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team fell to Franklin Pierce University by a score of 18-10 Saturday evening.
 
The Saints (4-6) were led offensively by Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y.) with four goals while Sydney Gordon (Hamburg, N.Y.) added three of her own. Sam Newlin (Austin, Texas) finished with three points (1 goal, 2 assists) with Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y.) adding two points of her own (1 goal, 1 assist). Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) added the other goal for DYU. Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y.) got the offense going, winning eight draw controls.
 
Emily Fischer (Grand Island, N.Y.) led the defense, grabbing two groundballs while causing two turnovers. Two other Saints had two groundballs while three others caused two turnovers each.
 
Facing a seven-goal deficit in the first quarter, Gordon got the Saints on the board at the 1:01 mark of the frame. The Falcons added another goal in the early going of the second, but Newlin found Gordon at the 12:26 mark of the quarter for her second goal of the day. FPU added two more goals to make it 10-2 but a pair of goals from Handley made it a 10-4 game. The Falcons were able to add one more goal before the break.
 
Gordon got the scoring going in the third quarter, scoring on the woman-up opportunity just 31 seconds into the half. FPU answered, scoring a pair of goals to make it 13-5. Goals by Newlin and Handley helped close the gap, scoring just a minute apart.
 
Buck and Bernas helped close the gap to five goals in the early goings of the final frame of regulation but four goals by the Falcons helped secure the win.
 
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y.) went the distance in net, making nine saves.
 
The Saints will have a quick turnaround as they face No. 21 Saint Anselm College tomorrow at 12 p.m.
