BUFFALO, N.Y. – Playing in their first conference game of the season, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team scored three unanswered goals to knock off RV Molloy University Saturday afternoon at Dobson Field.
The Saints (4-5, 1-0 ECC) were led offensively by
Sam Newlin (Austin, Texas) with five goals and
Sydney Gordon (Hamburg, N.Y.) with four goals including the double overtime winner.
Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y.) finished with two points (1 goal, 1 assist) with
Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) also finding the back of the net.
Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y.) got the offense going, winning eight draw controls.
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y.) led the defense, picking up eight groundballs while Parker grabbed four groundballs and caused three turnovers.
Gordon got the scoring going, finding the net at the 11:28 mark of the first quarter. Molloy, who received votes in the latest IWLCA DII Poll, scored three straight to make it 3-1 with 2:45 left in the frame. DYU answered with a run of their own, scoring three goals that were bookended by Newlin with Gordon adding one in between to give them the 4-3 lead after a quarter of play.
The Lions scored first in the second quarter to draw even with the Saints but a goal by Gordon pushed their lead back to one. Molloy went on a run, scoring three straight before Buck helped make it 7-6 going into the break.
After the halftime, Molloy came out scoring two goals just two minutes apart to make it 9-6 with 12:26 left in the third. Newlin halted the run by scoring a pair of goals to make it 9-8 with 7:32 left in the frame. The Lions pushed their lead back to two goals heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final frame of regulation, Newlin scored at the 10:27 mark with Bernas' goal forcing the extra time that came with 2:50 remaining in regulation.
After a scoreless first overtime, Gordon was able to bring the Saints home with a win with just nine ticks remaining in second overtime.
Stworzydlak earned the win in net, going the distance while making 16 saves. Stworzydlak was a wall in net for the final 21 minutes of play, making five saves.
The Saints will be back in action next Friday, March 29th, as they travel north to take in Franklin Pierce University at 4 p.m.
