BUFFALO, N.Y. – Opening up East Coast Conference action, the D'Youville University men's lacrosse team fell to Molloy University by a score of 23-10 Saturday afternoon.
The Saints (1-8, 0-1 ECC) were led offensively by
Tristan Engelhardt (Orlando, Fla.) with five points (4 goals, 1 assist) with
Nick Sholett (Vestal, N.Y.) finishing the day with four points (2 goals, 2 assists).
Luciano Gonzalez (Coquitlam, British Columbia) had three points (1 goal, 2 assists) while three other Saints each found the back of the net.
Jordan Brown (Baltimore, Md.) led the team in groundballs with seven while
Logan Schwartz (Depew, N.Y.),
Demar Clark (Canfield, Ohio), and Sholett each grabbed three groundballs. Sholett and Schwartz also caused two turnovers each in the effort.
After trailing 6-0 in the first 10 minutes of action, DYU got on the board as Sholett found Engelhardt for the man-up goal. The Lions were able to go on a 6-0 run before Sholett found Engelhardt once again at the 5:17 mark of the second quarter. Sholett kept the offense going, getting in the scoring column himself to make to make it 12-3 with 3:48 left until the break. Molloy was able to add one more to take the 13-3 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Lions scored the first two goals but goals by
Brady Ruffalo (Webster, N.Y.) and Engelhardt made it 14-5 with 10:02 left in the third quarter. DYU scored one more time in the frame as Gonzalez found
Tyler Vohwinkel (Buffalo, N.Y.) to make tit 16-6.
In the fourth, Engelhardt scored the first goal of the quarter unassisted to make it 20-7 with 13:10 left in regulation. Sholett scored his second goal at the 11:16 mark of the quarter as Gonzalez and
Carsyn Kent (Whitby, Ontario) scored the final two goals of the contest.
William Nichols (Palmyra, N.Y.) earned the loss in net, making two saves in one quarter of action.
Ryan McInnes (Port Monmouth, N.J.) saw the most action in the cage, making five saves.
The Saints will be back in action next Wednesday, March 20th, as they travel to The College of Saint Rose for a 4 p.m. game.
