Women's Lacrosse Falls in High Scoring Affair to Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del. – Wrapping up their spring break trip out east, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team fell to Wilmington University by a score of 25-12.
 
The Saints (2-5) were led offensively by Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y.) with five points (4 goals, 1 assist) while Sydney Gordon (Hamburg, N.Y.) and Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y.) each finished with three goals and one assist. Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) also got in the scoring column, adding a pair of goals. Sam Newlin (Austin, Texas) had a solid outing, assisting on a pair of goals while winning 10 draw controls.
 
Brinn Stworzydlak (Haburg, N.Y.) led the defense with two groundballs while Erin Hardick (Amherst, N.Y.) and Lily Buckley (Orchard Park, N.Y.) each caused one turnover.
 
DYU got the scoring going first as Buck scored 33 seconds onto the game off the assist from Handley. The Wildcats scored a pair of goals before Bernas and Buck were able to get the lead back, scoring 50 seconds apart. Wilmington tied the game at 3-3 but goals by Gordon and Handley gave DYU the 5-3 advantage. The Wildcats scored three unanswered goals to take the 6-5 lead after the first quarter.
 
Wilmington continued their scoring streak, scoring the first four goals of the second quarter to take a 10-5 lead. The Saints were able to get two goals back off the scores from Handley and Buck to make it 10-7 with 9:28 until the break.
 
The Wildcats extended their lead to six before Gordon scored back-to-back goals to make it 13-9 with 53 seconds until the half. Wilmington got one goal back, but Handley made it a 14-10 game going into the half.
 
Opening up the second half, Handley stayed with the hot hand, scoring off the feed from Danielle Gephart (Eden, N.Y.) to inch closer. Wilmington responded, scoring eight unanswered goals to take the 22-11 lead. Still fighting, Bernas added her second goal in the fourth quarter to make it 11:38 left in regulation.
 
Stworzydlak played 52 minutes in net, making 10 saves. Fantasy Jimerson-Kenjockety (Senaca Nation, N.Y.) went the rest of the way in net for DYU.
 
The Saints will continue their road trip next Wednesday, March 20th, as they travel to Notre Dame College for a 4 p.m. game.
