Moxley Nets 16-Points as Women's Basketball Falls to Daemen

AMHERST, N.Y. – Making the quick trip up the road, the D'Youville University women's basketball team fell to rival Daemen University by the score of 67-51 Sunday afternoon.

The Saints (9-16, 7-8 ECC) were led offensively by Brianne Moxley (Penfield, N.Y.) with 16 points while Jaelyn Vleer-Elliott (Waterville, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds.

It was a back-and-forth game in the first quarter of action, with neither team gaining much of an advantage. The Wildcats got the 11-8 lead with just over three minutes left in the frame but a three-pointer by Moxley was able to tie things up once again. Daemen got a bucket back, but DYU kept pace as Vleer-Elliott grabbed the offensive board and got the putback to tie the game once again. Daemen was able to find another but as the seconds ticked away to lead 15-13 after 10 minutes of action.

Daemen carried the momentum into the second quarter, opening up a 27-13 lead. Carla Torrubia Cano (Melilla, Spain) was able to halt the run with a jumper in the lane. The Wildcats responded, growing their lead to 17 in the final minutes. Moxley got the last points of quarter, converting the and-one opportunity as the Saints trailed 36-22 going into the break.

D'Youville did not go down without a fight, outscoring the Wildcats 16-11 in the final frame.

The Saints went 18-for-55 (32.7 percent) from the field while going 12-for-15 (80.0 percent) from the free throw line. The Wildcats went 28-for-60 (46.7 percent) from the floor while going 4-for-4 (100.0 percent) from the free throw line. Daemen held the edge on the glass, grabbing 37 boards to D'Youville's 33 boards.

DYU will be back in action this Wednesday, February 28th, as they host Roberts Wesleyan University for Senior Night. Action to begin at 6 p.m.
