Handley's Six-Goal Second Half Helps Power Saints Past Post

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Making their 2024 season debut, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team used a 12-goal second half to take the 14-8 win against Post University Saturday afternoon.
 
The Saints (1-0) were led by the two-head monster of Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y.) and Sam Newlin (Austin, Texas) who accounted for 11 of the team's goals. Handley finished with six goals and one assist while Newlin had five goals. Sydney Gordon (Hamburg, N.Y.) finished with three points (1 goal, 2 assists) with Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y.) also finishing with three points. Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) also helped power the offense with two points (1 goal, 1 assists). Newlin also put the team in position to generate offense, winning six draw controls.
 
On the defensive end, Sophia Conzone (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the way with five groundballs and five cause turnovers. Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y.) also had a strong game defensively, grabbing four groundballs.
 
After falling down 2-0 in the early goings on the first quarter, DYU got on the board at the 1:13 mark with Buck finding Newlin for the first goal of the new campaign. The Eagles got on back in the early minutes of the second frame before Newlin scored her second goal at the 11:26 mark off the feed from Bernas. Post was able to tack on one more goal to take the 4-2 lead into the break.
 
The Eagles scored the first goal of the second half before the Saints scored eight unanswered goals from the 6:59 mark of the third quarter until the 9:05 mark of the fourth quarter. During the run, both Handley and Newlin scored three goals each. The Eagles scored their sixth goal at the 5:05 mark before DYU added three unanswered to lead 13-6 with just over two minutes to play to put the game out of reach.
 
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y.) went the distance between the pipes, making 10 saves.
 
The Saints will have a quick turnaround as they face Dominican University tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
