Simpson and Glinski Homer; Saints' Comeback Bid Falls Short Against West Chester

GLENVILLE, WV – The D'Youville University baseball team was defeated by West Chester College of Pennsylvania in a 14-10 slugfest on Saturday.

RHP Bryce Hediger (Chaffee, N.Y.) got the start on the mound for the Saints but was chased in the second inning after allowing ten runs, six of them being earned.

D'Youville found themselves down 11-0 after two innings, but they wouldn't go down quietly. In the top of the third, SS Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) laced a double down the left field line to bring in two runs. 1B Jon Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) followed Morris with an RBI groundout to make it 11-3. Next batter, RF Jeremy Glinski (Sloan, N.Y.) belted his second home run of the season to cut the Rams' lead to 11-5.

After RHP Zach Penner (Leamington, Ontario) pitched a scoreless bottom of the third, the Saints continued to chip away in the top of the fourth. 3B Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) walked, C Hunter Nowak (Hamburg, N.Y.) laid down a bunt single, and DH Alex Dzimian (Lakeview, N.Y.) walked to load the bases to start the inning. Morris drew a bases loaded walk and Nowak scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-7.

After West Chester extended their lead to 14-7 in the bottom of the fifth, DYU continued to fight back in the top of the sixth. After Nowak was hit by a pitch, Dzimian drew a walk, and LF Ethan Hammond (Oakville, Ontario) singled to left, the Saints had the bases loaded with no outs. Morris grounded into a double play, which brought in a run to make it 14-8. Simpson then stepped in and blasted his fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot over the left field wall to draw within four of the Rams.

RHP Austin Delgado came in to make his first relief appearance as a Saint and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth.

RHP Sam Worthen (Guelph, Ontario) relieved Delgado in the bottom of the seventh to make his first appearance of the season and fanned three batters in two scoreless innings of work.

The Saints saw one more scoring opportunity in the top of the eighth. They loaded the bases after Hammond and CF Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) drew walks and Glinski was hit by a pitch, but 2B Craig Oliver (Fredericton, New Brunswick) grounded out to first to end the threat, and West Chester went on to clinch the win.

D'Youville will now head to Morgantown, West Virginia where they will face Mercyhurst College on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
