Saints Score Six in the Ninth to Win Thriller Against Mercyhurst

MORGANTOWN, WV – The D'Youville University baseball team beat Mercyhurst University in a 11-10 thriller on Sunday, coming back from five runs down in the ninth to win.

RHP Mihir Manerikar (Mississauga, Ontario) made his first collegiate start on the mound for the Saints, hurling three innings, allowing three earned runs, and striking out three batters.

DYU got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first when RF Jeremy Glinski (Sloan, N.Y.) ripped an RBI double over the left fielder's head and CF Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) reached on a throwing error by the second baseman to bring in a run.

The Lakers responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and two more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 advantage. In the top of the third, 1B Jon Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) singled and Glinski drew a walk, leading to a two-run double from Hollins to tie the game at four.

After Mercyhurst took a 7-4 lead in the fifth, the Saints got one run back in the top of the sixth when C Hunter Nowak (Hamburg, N.Y.) singled to left to make it 7-5.

The Lakers tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 10-5 lead heading to the final frame. After SS Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to start the top of the ninth, Simpson launched a home run for the second straight day to cut Mercyhurst's lead to 10-7. Glinski then ripped a single off the shortstop's glove and into left field and Hollins walked to bring the tying run to the plate. With one out, 3B Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) hit a single to center to bring the DYU within two. Nowak then blooped a single into left for his third hit of the day to load the bases. 2B Alex Dzimian (Lakeview, N.Y.) drew a walk to bring home Hollins and make it 10-9. LF Nick DiCarlo (Lewiston, N.Y.) then ripped a frozen rope to shortstop that caromed away, allowing Boucher and Nowak to score and give the Saints the lead, 11-10.

RHP Sam Worthen (Guelph, Ontario) came in to try and get the save in the bottom of the ninth. After the Lakers loaded the bases to start the inning, Worthen induced a line drive double play and struck out the next batter to secure the comeback win for D'Youville.

The Saints will be back in action next Friday in Cary, North Carolina when they face Frostburg State University at 1:00 p.m.
