Men's Basketball Suffers First Loss of Season to Wilmington

WILMINGTON, D.E. – The D'Youville University men's basketball team fell to Wilmington University 97-77 at the ECC/CACC Basketball Challenge on Sunday.

Redshirt junior Trayton Trice (Romeoville, Ill.) led the way for the Saints, recording a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Graduate student Jordan Turner (Houston, Texas) and redshirt junior Justin Moore (Oxford, Ala.) also posted solid offensive performances, scoring 18 and 15 points, respectively.

The Saints got out to an early 9-5 lead thanks to four points from Moore and a three-pointer from Trice. A mid-range jumper from junior Renard Fontes-Jules (Brockton, Mass.) and another three-pointer from Trice kept it a four-point lead with under 15 minutes to go in the half.

Moore cashed in from downtown to extend the lead to eight with 12:20 remaining. Redshirt junior Noah Hutchins (Buffalo, N.Y.) made it 26-18 with a layup plus a free throw. Turner converted a three-point play of his own to increase DYU's lead to twelve with under ten minutes remaining. Wilmington embarked on a 21-7 run to take a 41-39 lead at the 3:07 mark. A layup by Turner put a stop to the run, but the Saints went to halftime trailing 51-43.

A layup from Fontes-Jules and a mid-range jumper from Moore in the early goings of the second half kept DYU within eight points. Wilmington continued to distance themselves, however, and by the 12-minute mark they opened up a 20-point lead over the Saints.

A 15-5 run from the Saints brought them within 10 points with 6:20 left to play. On that run, Turner contributed six points with a layup and four free throws. Wilmington proceeded to rattle off 11 straight points to extend their lead back to 21 and they went on to clinch the 97-77 victory.

D'Youville will be back in action on Wednesday, when they hit the road again to face Edinboro University at 7:00 p.m.
