BUFFALO, N.Y. – The D'Youville University Volleyball Team celebrate their Senior day on Sunday afternoon followed by a tough 3-2 loss to ECC opponent Queens College.
D'Youville University 2 vs Queens College 3 – (17-25, 25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 10-15)
Set One
Queens took the early lead to start the match jumping up 13-8. Kills from
Alex Darby (Huntington, WV / Spring Valley),
Mitha Hatwar (Columbus, OH / Olentangy Liberty), and
Madeline O'Brien (East Amherst, N.Y. / Clarence) helped keep the Saints in the game, but as play continued, the Knights went on a five-point run to lead 22-14. O'Brien recorded the final kill for the Saints in the set, but the Knights would take set one 25-17.
Set Two
The Knights again took the lead jumping up 7-2 to start the second set.
Maddie Boglev (Hamburg, N.Y. / St. Mary's) had two kills in a four-point run for the Saints to bring them within two at 11-9. D'Youville went on a 7-1 run to take the lead 16-14. The Knights quickly fought back jumping up 21-17, but kills from Hatwar and
Eve Musielak (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) put the Saints back ahead 23-22. An error from the Knights and an ace from
Mitha Hatwar gave the Saints the 25-23 comeback win in set two.
Set Three
The Saints kept the momentum going and quickly jumped up 9-6 in the third set following a six-point run. D'Youville continued to climb and kills from
Alex Darby and
Giselle Ramirez (Miami, FL / School for Advanced Studies) put the Saints ahead 20-15. The Saints offense had found their stride and a kill and an ace from Ramirez gave the Saints the 25-19 win in set three.
Set Four
Queens took the control back in set four needing to stay alive and jumping up 15-5. The Saints put together a five-point run to bring them back within five, but the Knights continued to climb. With Queens leading at 23-15, Ramirez recorded another kill and an ace along with Musielak recording a kill, but the Knights would score the final two points to take the fourth set 25-18.
Set Five
In the winner-take-all set, the Knights took an early lead at 11-7.
Cameron Ulinski (Parkland, FL / Marjory Stoneman Douglas),
Alex Darby, and
Giselle Ramirez all recorded kills, but it was not enough to stop the Knights and they would take the fifth set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
