Women's Basketball Falls to Saint Thomas Aquinas

SPARKILL, NY – The D'Youville University women's basketball team was defeated by St. Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday by a score of 67-46.
 
Anna Jankovic (Averill Park, N.Y.) led the Saints in both scoring and rebounding with 14 points and seven boards, along with two steals. Brianne Moxley (Penfield, N.Y.) added nine points, six rebounds, and two steals for DYU.
 
Jaelyn Vleer-Elliott (Waterville, N.Y.) got the Saints on the board with a layup two minutes into the first quarter. Close-range jumpers from Carla Torrubia Cano (Melilla, Spain) and Sofie Fuglsang (Oberanven, Luxembourg) made the score 8-6 in favor of the Spartans in the early stages of the first quarter. An 8-0 run from STAC gave them a 10-point advantage before a three from Jankovic put a stop to the run with 3:52 to go. The Spartans would take a 19-8 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
A 12-0 run to begin the second quarter put STAC ahead 30-9. Three-pointers from Jankovic and Moxley brought the Saints within 13, making it 30-17 at the 4:23 mark. A three-point play from Moxley made it 35-20 with 2:48 remaining until halftime. Jankovic converted a layup as time expired, and the Saints went to the locker room trailing 38-26.
 
A layup from Jankovic brought D'Youville within ten early in the third quarter. Ava Pearson (Colonie, N.Y.) drilled a three to make it 42-31 at the 6:40 mark. Moxley's second three-pointer of the day kept the Saints within 12, making it 47-35 with 4:45 left in the third quarter. STAC would reel off a 13-0 run to take a commanding 58-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
A pair of free throws from Morgan Giancaterino (Orchard Park, N.Y.) put an end to the Saints' scoring drought, making it 60-37 with 8:01 to play. Seven straight points from the Spartans gave them their largest lead of the day, making it 67-37 with 5:48 to go. Five straight points from Mercy Lasu (Innisfil, Canada) put an end to STAC's run, and a three pointer from Jankovic and a mid-range jumper from Pearson helped DYU close out the game on a 9-0 run.
 
The Saints will be back home next weekend, as they host Queens College at the Palace on Porter, Friday at 6:00 p.m.
