FLUSHING, N.Y. – Taking their first conference road trip of the season, the D'Youville University men's basketball team used a hot start to come away with the 82-77 win over Queens College Friday evening.
The Saints (2-6, 1-1 ECC) had four players score in double-digits with
Bryson Birdsong (Winter Haven, Fla.) leading the way with 17 points while
Trayton Trice (Romeoville, Ill.) added 16 points to go along with eight rebounds.
Chase Jenkins (Titusville, Fla.) had 13 points as well as eight boards while
Renard Fontes-Jules (Brockton, Mass.) had 12 points to go with seven assists.
DYU got out to a hot start, scoring the game's first 15 points over a five-minute span. During the run, Jenkins led the way with five points while Trice added four points. The Knights were able to respond with a run of their own, scoring 11 of the game's next 13 points to make it 17-11.
Kevin Thompson (Buffalo, N.Y.) was able to halt the run, draining a three-pointer off the dish from Fontes-Jules. D'Youville was able to push it back to a double-digit lead with Birdsong hitting a three-pointer off the feed from Fontes-Jules.
Queens made it a 25-17 game before Fontes-Jules took over, scoring the next six points to push the Saints' lead back to 14 points with just over five minutes left in the first half.
With just over a minute left before the break, the Knights were able to make it a two-possession game but a three and a jumper in the lane by Birdsong made it 42-33. Queens was able to get a jumper to go before the break, making it 42-35 at halftime.
Queens came out of the break going on an 11-4 run to tie the game at 46-46 at the 14:52 mark of the second half.
The teams battled in the next eight minutes of action, going tic-for-tac and swapping the lead on numerous occasions.
D'Youville was able to get their final lead of the game with just under six minutes left in regulation thanks in part to Trice making a pair of layups to put the team up, 68-64.
Nasir Hammonds (Norfolk, Va.) put the game out of reach with just seconds remaining, throwing down an emphatic two-handed jam to put the exclamation point on the game.
The Saints went 28-for-59 (47.5 percent) from the field while going 22-for-28 (78.6 percent) from the free throw line. The Knights went 28-for-65 (43.1 percent) from the floor while going 18-for-26 (69.2 percent) from the free throw line. The teams were even on the glass, grabbing 38 rebounds each.
D'Youville will close-out their four-game road trip this Sunday, December 10th, as they travel to Molloy University for a 2 p.m. tip.
