NORTH CANTON, Ohio – In the midst of their four-game road trip, the D'Youville University men's basketball team fell to #25 Walsh University by a score of 82-42 Sunday afternoon.
The Saints (1-6, 0-1 ECC) were led offensively by
Mason Putnam (Prattsburgh, N.Y.) and
Chase Jenkins (Titusville, N.Y.) who each scored 11 points.
Nasir Hammonds (Norfolk, Va.) led the team in rebounding, grabbing five boards with
Kevin Thompson (Buffalo, N.Y.) adding four rebounds.
Thompson got DYU on the board to get the scoring going, draining a three-pointer off the assist from
Renard Fontes-Jules (Brockton, Mass.). After a pair of free throws from the Warriors, Putnam got his first bucket of the afternoon to give D'Youville the 5-2 lead.
Walsh was able to take over the momentum, going on a 14-0 run to take a 16-5 lead at the 13:46 mark of the first half. Jenkins was able to break up the run with a jumper. Walsh continued to build upon their lead, up by as many as 23 late into the half.
Putnam was able to help the Saints chip into the lead, knocking down a pair of threes on back-to-back possessions to make it 39-20 with just over two minutes before the break. The teams traded buckets in the closing minute of the first half as the Warriors took a 41-22 lead into the break.
With the Saints looking for offense in the second half, Jenkins threw down a dunk off the dish from Putnam and two possessions later, Hammonds converted the old fashioned three-point play with an and-one to cut the deficit to 23 points seven minutes into the second half.
DYU went 18-for-69 (26.1 percent) from the floor while Walsh went 34-for-61 (55.7 percent) from the field. The Warriors also had the advantage on the glass, grabbing 45 rebounds to the Saints' 27 rebounds. D'Youville did take advantage of the Warriors turnovers, scoring 22 points off turnovers to their 18 points.
The Saints will continue their road trip when they head to Queens College this Friday, December 8th, for conference play at 7:30 p.m.
