BUFFALO, N.Y.- The D'Youville men's soccer team are set to get rolling on the 2022 season they face the Pioneers of Malone University on Thursday, Aug. 25. The matchup is set to take place at 4:30 p.m. from King Field.
SCOUTING MALONE
During the 2021 season, Malone University went 1-17, securing one win within the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Pioneers were impressive in the defensive end, making 90 saves while forcing their opponents to make 53.
OPENING XI
I. The Saints finished the 2021 campaign at 5-10-3 overall, going 0-8-1 in the East Coast Conference.
II. D'Youville returns 14 to the roster this year, including Felipe Santos and Paulo Carvalho. Santos recorded eight goals on the season in 2021, second-highest on the team. Carvalho scored two goals.
III. Ethan Picard returns to the pitch for the Saints. Picard started 15 matches between the pipes during the 2021 campaign, recording four wins and three ties. The Dayton, Ohio native was credited with 87 saves, recording a .791 save percentage in his rookie year.
IV. Carvalho tied for first on the team for assists during the 2021 year, recording four as a freshman.
V. The Saints finished the 2021 season with a .514 shot-on-goal percentage, putting 114 on frame.
VI. Santos was credited with a team-high two gamewinners last season, scoring the gamewinner against Villa Maria (Sept. 8) and Bryant & Stratton (Albany) (Nov. 13).
VII. D'Youville finished the 2021 season on a high-note, defeating Bryant & Stratton (Albany) 2-1 in their final match at the USCAA Championships.
VIII. The Saints welcome 14 new faces to the roster this year. The team is full of international flair, as five Saints come hailing from Brazil and one joins from Germany.
IX. The Saints deepened their bench at the goalkeeper position, as Josh Marer and Noah Winiarski joined the squad this season. Marer comes to DYU from Cohoes High School in Cohoes, N.Y. He was a Colonial Council First Team All-Star goalkeeper his senior year. Winarski joins the Saints from Cheektowaga, N.Y. where he was named the Western New York Small School First Team.
X. Head Coach Brendan Murphy is in his ninth year at the helm of the men's soccer program.
XI. Rounding out Murphy's coaching staff are Aaron Siegel (second year, assistant coach), Benny Spirk (second year, graduate assistant), and Rob McNeal (first year, assistant coach).
