BRIDGEPORT, CONN. - The D'Youville softball team continued a trio of road East Coast Conference doubleheaders this weekend, falling twice to Bridgeport, 14-5 and 4-1, Saturday afternoon. The Saints moved to 15-9 and 4-6 in the ECC this season.
The Purple Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs in the top of the third inning, sophomore Lauren Booth took a 2-2 pitch and lined it over the center fielder's head for a bases-clearing, three-run double that would knot the game back at three.
Bridgeport re-established a one-run lead in the bottom of the third before breaking the game open with five runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-3 lead.
Junior Hannah Bardeen got two runs back for the Saints in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run home run to left field. Bardeen's trip around the bases was her fourth of the season and second in as many days after hitting one against St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday.
The Purple Knights went back on the attack with a run in the home half of the fifth before ending the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Saints grabbed the game's first run in the top of the third inning when senior Maddy Pepke advanced home while Bardeen was caught in a rundown between first and second.
D'Youville's advantage lasted until the bottom of the fifth inning when Bridgeport countered with three runs to claim control of the game. The Saints got the tying run in scoring position in the top of the sixth inning but were unable to push the run across.
The Saints wrap up the weekend with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at the College of Staten Island. Game times are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
