SPARKILL, N.Y. — D'Youville (22-19) secured a decisive 8–2 victory over the College of Staten Island (13-23) before following up with a 7–4 comeback win against Mercy University (25-18) at Spartan Field to advance to the East Coast Conference Championship on Sunday.
In the first game against Staten Island, D'Youville recorded nine hits, including four doubles and a home run, to dominate offensively. The Saints opened the scoring in the second inning when
Jorja Sandilands (Brooklin, Ontario / Brooklin) doubled to right center and later scored on
Mikayla Hussar's (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca West) single, which was aided by an error. At the end of the second inning, D'Youville led 1–0.
In the third inning,
Frankie Morris (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) doubled and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Sandilands then hit a two-run homer to left field, bringing the score to 3–1 in favor of D'Youville. The fourth inning saw
Isabella Mancino (Wynantskill, N.Y. / Averill Park) double and score on
Danielle Fenlong's (Georgetown, Ontario / Christ the King) single.
Gabby Moreno (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Buena Vista) scored on a sacrifice fly by Morris, increasing D'Youville's lead to 5–2.
A quiet fifth inning left the score unchanged. However, D'Youville extended their lead in the sixth inning. Mancino and Moreno reached base and advanced on a wild pitch.
Shannon Howes singled, driving in Mancino, while additional runs scored on a sacrifice fly and a throwing error. The score was 8–2 at the end of the sixth. The seventh inning remained scoreless for both teams, and D'Youville secured the victory with a final score of 8–2.
Summer Clark (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville East) delivered a complete game performance against the Dolphins, pitching 7 innings while allowing 2 earned runs. She struck out 5 batters and issued only 2 walks, showcasing control throughout her 97-pitch outing.
Jorja Sandilands excelled by scoring two runs and driving in two more, including a home run, in the game.
Frankie Morris contributed significantly with two RBIs, one run, and a double, while
Isabella Mancino added two hits and scored twice, further boosting the team's overall performance.
In the second game against Mercy, D'Youville faced a tightly contested matchup that saw momentum shift in the later innings. Mercy took an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. The Mavericks singled to center field, driving in a run, followed by a single to the pitcher, which, combined with a throwing error, allowed another run to score. At the end of the first inning, the Mavericks led 2–0.
In the third inning, Mercy extended its lead with two more runs pushing the score to 4–0. The Saints responded in the fourth inning.
Frankie Morris,
Annie Jorgenson (Victoria, B.C. / Belmont), and
Jorja Sandilands each walked to load the bases.
Mikayla Hussar then singled to center field, scoring Morris.
Isabella Mancino followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing Jorgenson home. The inning ended with Mercy leading 4–2.
In the sixth, D'Youville narrowed the gap further when
Sophia Arno (Clarence Center, N.Y. / The Brook Hill School) singled to right center, allowing Hussar to score, making it 4–3 in Mercy's favor. The seventh inning proved decisive for D'Youville. Morris and Jorgenson reached base, and a fielder's choice by Mancino, combined with a throwing error, allowed both Morris and Jorgenson to score.
Gabby Moreno singled to drive in Sandilands, and Mancino scored on a wild pitch. D'Youville took the lead, finishing the inning ahead 7–4, securing a comeback win.
Hailee Jenkins (Ontario, Canada / Fenelon Falls) started the game for D'Youville, pitching 2 1/3 innings and allowing three earned runs on three hits while striking out two batters and walking three.
Kendal Lehnen (Sherrill, N.Y. / Vernon Verona Sherrill) delivered a strong relief performance, pitching 4 2/3 innings and securing the win. Lehnen allowed just one hit and struck out three batters, issuing two walks over 68 pitches.
Morris scored two runs and drew two walks, making a significant contribution at the plate. Jorgenson also crossed the plate twice, adding to the team's offensive output. Mancino drove in two runs, showcasing her ability to bring teammates home. Hussar finished with one hit, one run, and one RBI, contributing across multiple facets of the game.
