NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The D'Youville baseball wrapped up a three-game East Coast Conference, falling in a nail biter to Bridgeport, 6-5. The loss moves the Saints to 7-11 on the season and 1-5 in the ECC.
The Purple Knights struck first in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs. Senior George Farid cut the deficit in half in the home half of the first with a solo home run to left field.
The Bridgeport offense expanded their lead to 6-2 with a run in the second, a pair of runs in the third, and one more in the fourth. Farid answered again in the bottom of the third inning with another solo home run to left field. The Mississauga, Ontario native's third trip around the bases of the weekend and fifth of the season set a new single-season program record for home runs.
Trailing by three runs in the bottom of the sixth, freshman Dillon Crook and sophomore Alex Dzimian picked up RBI singles to trim the Purple Knight advantage to one run at 6-5. Despite getting the tying run on base in each of the last three innings, the Saints were unable to push the game to extra innings.
ON THE MOUND
Freshman Rob Stephens got the starting nod in the series finale and allowed three earned runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Freshman Samuel Worthen pitched the final five innings for the Saints and shut down the Bridgeport offense while not surrendering a run on five hits.
AT THE PLATE
Five Saints hit safely multiple times in the league setback, led by 3-for-3 days from junior Craig Oliver and freshman Alec Boucher (2B) ... The pair of freshmen were followed up by Dzimian (3-for-5, 2B, RBI), Crook (2-for-4, RBI), and Farid (2-for-5, 2 HR, 2 RBI).
