AUBURNDALE, Fla. - On the third day of their spring trip, the D'Youville baseball team grabbed an early five-run lead but were unable to hold it in a 16-7 defeat to USciences at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. Monday's setback drops the Saints to 4-3 overall on the season.
The Saints jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of five walks, two errors, and one hit batter. Sophomore Alex Dzimian advanced home to open the scoring on a throwing error from USciences' pitcher. Two batters later, junior Ethan Hammond crossed home plate when junior John Rogowski, Jr. was hit by a pitch. A throwing error on the next at-bat allowed senior George Farid to score from third with the bases loaded.
With the bases still loaded and two batters later, freshman Dillon Crook reached first on a walk to drive in reigning East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week, Alec Boucher. Batting for the second time in the opening frame, Dzimian also forced a base on balls to score Rogowski, Jr.
After being held scoreless for the first two innings, the Devils' (4-9) offense exploded for nine runs on six hits in the bottom of the third inning, flipping a five-run lead for the Saints into a four-run deficit.
Crook got one run back for the Saints in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI single to left-center, driving in freshman Chris Stefan from second base. With the bases loaded in the bottom half of the frame USciences tacked on two more runs with a walk and hit-by-pitch to take an 11-6 advantage.
Hammond rounded out the scoring for the Saints' offense with an RBI single to left-center in the top of the sixth to bring in sophomore Jeremy Glinski from second base.
Crook (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Hammond (2-for-4, RBI), and Stefan (2-for-5) led the Saints' offense in Tuesday's setback.
