DAVENPORT, Fla. - The D'Youville baseball had their hands full Monday afternoon, taking on Minnesota State, Mankato on the second day of their spring trip. After falling behind 5-0, the Saints battled back to trim their deficit to one run but the Mavericks pulled away to spoil D'Youville's comeback attempt. The Saints dropped to 4-2 overall this season.
The Mavericks (4-2) got on the board first, plating three runs in the bottom of the second inning courtesy of a two-run single and one more on a wild pitch.
Minnesota State would go on to plate a pair of runs in the fifth inning to stretch their lead to five runs thanks to a home run from Mikey Frederickson.
In the top half of the sixth inning, the Saints made their move as junior Ethan Hammond drove in two runs on a double to center field and senior George Farid hit his second home run in as many days, a two-run blast over the left-field fence to make it a 5-4 game.
A pair in each of the sixth and seventh innings for Minnesota State put the Saints away and handed D'Youville their first defeat on their spring trip.
Freshman Rob Stephens (1-1) started on the mound for the Saints and went 4.2 innings for the Saints … The right-hander struck out two while issuing five walks and was charged with three earned runs on four hits … Freshman Connor Joedicke (0.1 innings), sophomore Samuel Worthen (1.1 innings), and Dom Pitt (1.2 innings) each made appearances in relief for the Saints.
Sophomore's Alex Dzimian (2-for-5) and Jeremy Glinski (2-for-5) each had multi-hit outings for the Saints … Farid's fifth inning trip around the bases was his second at D'Youville and fifth in his collegiate career in the NCAA.
The Saints are back in action tomorrow morning for a 9:45 a.m. first pitch against USciences.
