AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The D'Youville University baseball team began their eight-game spring trip Sunday morning, sweeping a doubleheader, 9-2 and 10-6, over USciences at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. The pair of seven-inning victories improve the Saints to 4-1 on the young season.
The Saints came out swinging in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs, to give freshman pitcher Chris AuClair a two-run cushion before he even stepped on the mound. Freshman Alec Boucher drove in D'Youville's second run with an RBI single to left field.
The Saints were back for more in the top of the third inning where they plated four runs to create a 6-0 lead. Sophomore Jeremy Glinski doubled to center field to drive in fellow sophomore Alex Dzimian. Glinski would come around to score two batters later courtesy a fielding error from the Devils' second baseman. Later in the frame, Boucher picked up his third triple and first of three on the day to score two more runs.
Dzimian's double in the fourth inning plated another run and the first baseman later scored on a failed pick-off attempt. Boucher drove in his fourth RBI on his third hit of the game, a single to right-center that scored senior George Farid.
AuClair (2-0) impressed once again for the Saints in his second start of the season … The Baldwinsville, N.Y. native sent nine batters down on strikes while walking none in six innings … Sophomore Samuel Worthen came in relief of AuClair in the seventh and struck out two.
Three Saints hit safely multiple times in the opening tilt led by Dzimian's perfect game at the plate (4-for-4, 1 RBI), followed up by Boucher (3-for-4, 4 RBI) and Glinski (2-for-4, 1 RBI) … Six of D'Youville's 13 hits went for extra bases.
The Saints found themselves staring at a 4-0 deficit heading into the bottom half of the second inning but a pair of runs off of defensive errors and an RBI single by junior John Rogowski, Jr. cut the USciences lead to run.
A pair of home runs from Farid and freshman Phil Polakiewicz helped the Saints flip the game around as they put five runs on the board in the bottom of the third. Farid's three-run blast over the left-field wall was his first in D'Youville colors and Polakiewicz's first career home run was a two-run shot over the right-center fence.
Farid tacked on one more in the fourth inning with an RBI single to center and freshman Ethan Hammond advanced home after a Devil error for a key insurance run in the sixth inning.
A combined effort saw five Saints take the mound in game two … Junior Kyle Blunt (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win and tossed 2.1 innings in his relief outing … Freshman Harrison Lough got the starting nod but was roughed up for four earned runs … Freshman Mike Pasquarella (0.1 innings) made his second appearance on the season while Worthen (1.2 innings) and freshman Connor Joedicke (1.0 inning) shut the door on the Devils.
Farid (3-for-4, 4 RBI, HR) and Boucher (2-for-4, 2 3B) paced the Saints at the plate while six of the team's 11 hits went for extra bases.
The Saints will continue play in the Sunshine State tomorrow afternoon when they take on Minnesota State, Mankato, at 2:30 p.m. in Davenport, Fla.
