WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The D'Youville baseball team concluded their spring trip Saturday morning, erasing an early four-run deficit to win a five-inning, rain-shortened matchup against West Virginia-Wesleyan. After surrendering a four-run first inning from the Bobcats (0-11) and being held scoreless in the first three innings at the plate, the D'Youville offense flipped the switch to score five runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth. D'Youville's second one-run win in as many days improves their overall record to 6-3 while going 4-2 in Florida.
Freshman Alec Boucher got the Saints on the board in the fourth inning, advancing home on a wild pitch. Two batters later, freshman Dillon Crook cut the Bobcat lead to one with a two-run double to left field. Sophomores Alex Dzimian and Jeremy Glinksi added two more in the frame with RBI groundouts to hand the Saints a 5-4 lead.
Junior John Rogowski, Jr. drove in the deciding run with a double to right-center that plated senior George Farid. West Virginia-Wesleyan added one more in the bottom of the fifth and the Saints countered with another run in the top of the sixth but in the bottom of the sixth, the game was halted and later canceled because of lightning and rain. Since the Bobcats were unable to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning, the top half of the frame was erased so each team had an equal number of five innings to hit and thus, created the 6-5 final score.
Freshman Rob Stephens (2-1) overcame a tough first inning where he gave up three earned runs on two, two-out hits. In his final four innings on the bump, Stephens shut down the Bobcat offense, holding them scoreless on three hits.
Five Saints hit safely in Saturday's five-inning victory, led by Glinski's 2-for-3 (2B, RBI) day.
The Saints return from their Florida trip with back-to-back doubleheaders at Gannon beginning Saturday, March 19 at noon in Erie, Pa.
