Game One Notes
The Saints wasted no time getting on the board in game one. Senior George Farid drove in the game's first run with an RBI double and Boucher followed up with an RBI single, scoring Farid and put the Saints ahead 2-0 in the first inning. Hammond doubled D'Youville's early lead in the second with a two-run double.
A five-run fifth inning put the game out of reach as Farid drove in two more runs with his second double of the game and Boucher drove Farid in once more with an RBI double of his own to put the Saints ahead 9-0.
The Saints exploded for 10 runs in the top of the sixth inning. Boucher's big game continued with an RBI triple and later in the inning, the Essex, Ontario native plated two more runs with another double. Hammond also contributed to the sixth inning onslaught with a two-run single and freshman Phil Polakiewicz picked up an RBI double as well.
Freshman Rob Stephens (1-0) got the starting nod in the opener and picked up his first win in his first collegiate appearance on the mound … In four innings of work, Stephans fanned four batters and surrendered only three hits while allowing two earned runs … Senior Noah Welch and freshman Mike Pasquarella also made their D'Youville debuts in relief of Stephens.
Three Saints hit safely multiple times in Sunday's game one victory, led by Boucher (4-for-5, 5 RBI) and Hammond (3-for-3, 4 RBI) … Farid went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored … The Saints totaled 14 hits with seven of them going for extra bases.
The Nittany Lions jumped on the Saints in the series finale, plating a pair of runs in the first and one more each in the third and fourth frames.
The Saints grabbed one back in the top of the sixth inning when Farid advanced home on a passed ball. Freshman Caden Strobel crossed the plate for D'Youville in the seventh, advancing home on a ground ball double play but it was too little, too late as Greater Allegheny still held onto a six-run lead at 8-2.
Freshman Zach Penner (0-1) made his D'Youville and collegiate debut on the bump in the series finale … Penner struck out two and allowed two earned runs on three hits while issuing four walks in 3.2 innings … Sophomore Samuel Worthen also made his D'Youville debut going for 1.1 innings and sophomore Alex Dzimian also pitched an inning in relief.
Boucher (2-for-3) and Dzimian (2-for-4) each picked up a pair of hits for D'Youville.
