The new-look D'Youville baseball team opened the 2022 campaign on the right note, erupting for 11 runs on 14 hits in an 11-6 victory over Penn St.-Greater Allegheny. The opening day win, the program's first in a decade, moves the Saints to 1-0 on the season.
The Saints got on the board right away, plating the season's first run on an RBI double from junior Jeremy Glinski that scored sophomore Ethan Hammond.
Glinski doubled the D'Youville advantage in the top of the fifth inning, driving in sophomore Alex Dzmian on a base hit.
The Saints broke the game wide open in the top of the seventh inning with six runs on five hits, highlighted by a three-run double courtesy of Hammond. Glinski's third run-scoring knock of the game and freshman Alec Boucher's RBI triple also plated runs for the Saints.
The D'Youville offense was back for more in the top of the eighth inning when they tacked on three more runs as sophomore Caden Strobel picked up an RBI single.
Freshman lefty Chris AuClair (1-0) impressed in his collegiate debut, tossing five shutout innings while only surrendering two hits in his start … three other Saints featured on the mound including freshman Harrison Lough, junior Jared Glowniak, and freshman Dom Pitt.
Five Saints hit safely multiple times in Saturday's victory, led by 3-for-4 days from Glinski and Hammond … The pair was followed up by Boucher (2-for-4), Dzimian (2-for-5), and senior George Farid (2-for-5).
The Saints will wrap up the three-game series with Greater Allegheny tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
