Box Score BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The D'Youville women's volleyball sought back-to-back East Coast Conference wins Saturday, but the Saints fell in three sets at Bridgeport.
Bridgeport (8-6, 3-1 ECC) took the three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-19, and 25-17.
Set one started as a back-and-forth affair as the teams split the opening 20 points. Bridgeport took a 10-7 lead before a kill from Brianna Damstetter, an Emily Fischer ace, and a Bridgeport error tied the match for D'Youville (2-12, 1-3 ECC). Neither team would lead by more than four until Bridgeport took a 20-14 lead on a pair of Saint errors before closing the set on a 9-5 spurt.
D'Youville came out hot in set two and immediately built a 6-0 lead, fueled by three blocks combined from Nathalya Rocha and Damstetter. The saints would build the lead out to 13-6 before Bridgeport started the comeback. The Purple Knights rattled off seven straight points to tie the set at 13. D'Youville then took a 16-13 lead before Bridgeport rallied to take the lead for good at 18-17 off a Melanie Smith kill.
It was a similarly fast start for the Saints in set three as they built a 5-0 lead. Three Purple Knight errors fueled the scoring run. The Purple Knights responded immediately with a 7-0 run of their own. Bridgeport would not trail for the remainder of the set. D'Youville got as close as four on multiple occasions.
