WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The D'Youville women's volleyball team went 0-2 in a pair of non-conference matchups, first against Bloomsburg, 3-0, before being swept again at the hands of West Chester. The pair of setbacks drops the Saints to 3-18 overall this season.
Match 1 - Bloomsburg 3, D'Youville 0
In the first match of the day, D'Youville fell in straight sets to Bloomsburg (11-13). The Huskies hit .325 as a team and had 37 kills to only 11 errors. The Saints though had 24 kills and 24 errors as a team.
The opening set was tied at 3-3 and 4-4. The Saints took a 7-5 lead off a kill from freshman Emily Fischer and a Bloomsburg error. Four straight points put Bloomsburg back in front for good. D'Youville got within one on multiple occasions but couldn't tie the contest and lost the 25-18.
D'Youville led 5-1 to start set two. Freshman Jaycee Karelus capped the run with an ace. Bloomsburg chipped away at the lead and eventually took a 10-8 advantage. After D'Youville tied the set at 10, Bloomsburg scored seven of the next 11 points to take a 17-14 on a kill from Hannah white. The Huskies went on to take set two, 25-19.
Bloomsburg opened the third set on a 6-1 run before D'Youville responded with six straight to take a 7-6 lead. Another 6-1 run from Bloomsburg put the Huskies up 12-8 and forced a D'Youville timeout. Bloomsburg lengthen the lead to 19-10 after another 5-0 spurt and went on to win the set, 25-15, and the match.
Match 2 - West Chester 3, D'Youville 0
In the second match with West Chester, the Saints were swept in straight sets, 25-13, 25-20, 25-18, once more. Trailing 23-6 in the first set, the Saints responded with a 6-0 run, fueled by three consecutive service aces from Wlostowski. Kills by Rocha and freshman Olivia Jarosz also helped D'Youville cut their deficit down to 23-12 but the Saints were unable to recover from the 14-0 run by the Golden Rams to begin the match.
Trailing by one in the second set at 15-4, D'Youville rallied three consecutive points, highlighted by a kill from freshman Eve Musielak to grab a two-point advantage. But West Chester countered once more with a 7-1 run to close off the set.
D'Youville was in control of the third set, opening a seven-point gap at 17-10. Runs of 7-2 and 6-2 helped D'Youville build their lead but it all fell apart when the Golden Rams rattled off another big run. 11 straight points for the West Chester flipped D'Youville's seven-point advantage into a four-point deficit at 21-17.
Musielak topped the D'Youville tally in kills with seven … Rocha followed up with four kills … Killane led the second match with 13 digs.
The Saints will return to ECC action on Tuesday, Nov. 2, when they make the short trip to Amherst for a date with Daemen. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
