Baseball Begins Season with Doubleheader against Westminster

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Altamonte Springs, FL - The D'Youville baseball team began their 2020 season on Sunday afternoon, losing both games of a doubleheader against the Westminter Titans 8-4 and 13-2.

D'Youville played exceptionally well on the defensive side of the ball through the first three innings, allowing no runs. However in the bottom of the fourth, Westminster scored a pair of runs to break the scoreless tie and take the lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Spartans would respond. Josh Battaglia (Rochester, NY/Hilton) would reach base with two outs after getting hit by a pitch. Mateo Santos (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) would then reach base on an error by the Westminster shortstop. In the next at-bat, an identical play from the Titan's shortstop would allow Jeremy Glinski (Sloan, NY/Bishop-Timon St. Jude) to reach base and score Battaglia and Santos to tie the game.

Westminster would answer right back with four runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead, but D'Youville would again keep the game close with a pair of runs in the sixth. Justin Varney (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) would reach base on a fielder's choice, scoring on the next play as Alex Liem (Dorchester, Ont./Dorchester Secondary) doubled to bring him home. In the next at-bat, Jared Glowniak (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) grounded out to third to bring home Liem and cut the deficit to 6-4.

However, Westminster would get those runs back in the bottom of the sixth to win the game by the final of 8-4.

Battaglia and Glinski each picked up their first career hits in the loss while Renato Quinones (Lockport, NY/Saint Joe's) and Liem tallied hits as well. Adam Lampman (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing five earned runs and struck out four. Zach Cocking (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) made his pitching debut, pitching one inning and allowed one earned run.

The second game of the day went south quickly for the Spartans. Westminster scored eight runs in the first two innings before D'Youville scored a pair in the bottom of the third. Santos led off the bottom half of the inning with a double and then scored on an error two at-bats later. Liem would earn a walk and score on a ground-out from Quinones.

Five additional runs from Westminster would cross the plate in the top of the fourth to bring their run total to 13 as they won the game 13-2.

Santos collected his first career hit in the loss as Kevin Sanders (Buffalo, NY/City Honors), Glinski, and Quinones each collected hits as well. Roberto Pagliero (Vaughn, Ont./Bll Crothers) made his first career start with three strikeouts. Nick Jank (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) pitched 2.0 innings of relief with one strikeout.

Both Kyle Nash (Ancaster, Ont./Ancaster) and Glowniak made their team pitching debuts and allowed no runs in three innings of work. Nash went 2.0 innings with three strikeouts while Glowniak pitched 1.1 innings, striking out one and allowed no hits.

Logan Lipowski (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) saw time at second in both games while Matt Guenther (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) saw time at second and third.

The next game for the men comes on Monday as they play Anna Maria for one nine inning game at 1:15pm.
