Spartans Take Part in First AMCC Quad-Match of Season at Medaille

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's volleyball team lost a pair of conference matches on Saturday afternoon to the Penn State-Altoona Lions 3-0 and the Wittenberg Tigers 3-0 at Medaille.

Altoona came out in the first set of the Spartan's first match of the day very strong, leading 7-1 quickly. That lead would increase to 11 as the Lions would go on to win the first by the same margin at 25-14.

The Lions started off the second set in the exact same fashion as the first, leading 7-1. D'Youville would close the gap to three at 12-9 before Altoona went back up by six at 19-13. The Spartans would again pull to within three at 21-24, but the Lions would close out the second with a 25-22 victory.

Another six-point lead helped get Altoona out in front in the third quarter as they led 11-5. That lead would grow to 11 and eventually would fall to eight as the Lions took the third 25-17 and the match 3-0.

Dan Busha (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) led the team with nine kills while Mitch Mason (Eden, NY/Eden) and Anthony Dean (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) tallied eight digs each. Dean and Troy Stancampiano (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) tallied three kills each with Joshua Hoy (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) adding four. Karl Jauch (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) dished out 14 assists with Ali Khadra (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) adding a block and William Anderson (Lake View, NY/Frontier) had two service aces.

In their second match of the day, the Spartans led 5-4 before Wittenberg would come back to take a 10-6 lead. The Tigers would then go on to score 15 of the next 21 points to take the first 25-12.

D'Youville was again in the set early as they were tied at 6-6 before Wittenberg went on a 13-3 scoring run to lead 19-8. They would then continue to pour it on in the second to win the set 25-11.

The third would be the most competitive set of the match between the two teams. Wittenberg led 14-9 before D'Youville closed the gap to three at 21-18. The Spartans would then tie the match up at 23-23 but the Tigers would close out the set with two additional points to take the third 25-23 and the match 3-0.

Hoy, Stancampiano, and Busha tallied five kills each with Mason collecting 15 digs. Jauch tallied 15 assists with Khadra recording five blocks. Dean added two kills with Anderson adding three digs.

The Spartans will next host Medaille this Wednesday, March 4 at 7:00pm pm in the College Center Gym.
