Panthers Sweep Spartans on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Bradford, PA – The D'Youville baseball team dropped a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers by the final scores of 11-7 and 10-3.

The Spartans were on the board first in game one of the afternoon. Alex Liem (Dorchester, Ont./Dorchester Secondary) led off the inning with a double to right center field. A Nick Jank (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) single would move Liem to third as he would score on a Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) single through the right side to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead.

Bradford would answer with two runs in the bottom of the inning to go with two in the third and one in the fourth. They would then have a big six-run inning in the bottom of the sixth to lead 11-1.

Refusing to go quietly, D'Youville put together a strong seventh inning. With two outs, Matt Guenther (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) walked. Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) then reached after being hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Justin Varney (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) would single to score Guenther followed by a single from Renato Quinones (Lockport, NY/Saint Joe's) to make the score 11-4.

Shane Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) would then walk, moving Varney and Quinones up a base each. Connor Truitt (Rochester, NY/Early College) then drew a second straight walk to bring in Varney. Both Liem and Jank would earn walks, to bring in two more runs and make the score 11-6.

Kevin Sanders (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) then reached base after getting hit by a pitch to bring the score to 11-7. Unfortunately for the Spartans, their run production would end there as the final out was recorded and they fell 11-7 in game one.

Quinones and Jank led the team with two hits each as Haak, Varney, Critelli, and Numan-Ali each had one hit. Brendan Burke (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) got the start, pitching 4.0 innings and struck out one. Derek Mosher (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) pitched 1.2 innings, striking out two and Critelli pitched 0.1 inning.

Game two saw the Spartans strike first yet again. Haak led off the game with a single as Varney would reach on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat. He would then move to second on a Quinones ground out and score on a Critelli single for a 1-0 lead.

Three runs would cross the plate via the Bobcats in the second inning as they took a 3-1 lead. They then added one run in the fourth to increase their lead to 4-1.

D'Youville would pull back to within two in the fifth inning as they added a pair of runs. Jank doubled to lead off the inning, advancing to third on a wild pitch. He would then score two batters later as Guenther singled. Singles from Haak and Varney would move Guenther to third where he would score on a sac-fly from Quinones to make the game 4-3 in favor of Bradford.

Despite regaining their footing in the game, the Spartans would fall behind again as the Panthers scored four in the sixth and two in the eighth on their way to a 10-3 victory.

Haak led the team with three hits in the game with seven different players tallying one each. Quinones, Critelli, and Guenther each recorded an RBI in the game with Varney, Jank, and Guenther scoring the runs.

Bryce Little (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) got the start, going 5.0 innings and allowing four earned runs. Adam Lampman (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) pitched 1.0 inning in relief with Mosher and Jank coming in for an inning each as well. Mosher allowed no hits or runs in his one inning while Jank allowed just one hit and no earned runs.

The men will next host the Alfred State Pioneers this Wednesday, April 10 beginning at 1:00pm.
