D'Youville Drops Doubleheader to Penn State-Behrend at Home

Amherst, NY – The D'Youville baseball team dropped a pair of games to the Penn State-Behrend Lions on Wednesday afternoon, losing game one 12-0 and game two 22-8.

Behrend wasted no time in getting on the board in game one, scoring four in the top of the first. They would add one in the fourth as the Spartans remained in the game, but the Lions added six in the fifth and one in the sixth to go on to win the game 12-0.

Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) led the team with two hits, followed by Connor Truitt (Rochester, NY/Early College), Justin Varney (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta), Kevin Sanders (Buffalo, NY/City Honors), Brendan Burke (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford), and Alex Liem (Dorchester, Ont./Dorchester Secondary) all tallying a hit.

Nick Jank (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) earned his first start of the season and went 3.2 innings, allowing three earned runs. Derek Mosher (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) pitched an inning while Shane Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) closed out the game with 2.1 innings of work, allowing no earned runs.

Game two saw the Spartans get on the board first for their first run of the day. Haak began the inning with a walk, followed by a Truitt single. Varney then moved the two over with a sac-bunt as Renato Quinones (Lockport, NY/Saint Joe's) drove in Haak for the 1-0 lead.

Behrend came back with seven runs in the second to take a 7-1 lead. They then tacked on a run in the third and two in the fourth to go ahead 9-1 and then eight additional runs in the fifth to lead 17-1.

D'Youville would then get going in the bottom of the fifth. Sanders began the inning with a single, followed by Haak being hit by a pitch. Truitt then singled to score Sanders. Varney was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with Critelli getting hit by a pitch two batters later to drive in Haak. Burke would then bring home Truitt after getting hit by a pitch and Jank would single to score Varney as the Spartans trailed 18-6 after five.

Adding a run in the sixth, the Lions would go up 19-6. The Spartans came back with bottom of the seventh. Liem was hit by a pitch with one out, moving to second after a Burke single. Both would score in the next at-bat as Jank tripled. He would then score on an error as the team trailed 19-8.

With three runs in the eighth, the Lions extended their lead to 22-8. Neither team would get another run to cross the plate as D'Youville lost game two 22-8.

Jank led the team with a 3-5 and three RBI performance in game two. Truitt, Burke, and Sanders each had two hits with an RBI in the game. Haak scored a pair of runs in the loss.

Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) got the start, striking out two in 4.1 innings. Mosher, Haak, Burke, Truitt, and Quinones all made relief appearances.

D'Youville will play their final conference doubleheader of the season this Friday, April 26 at Pitt.-Greensburg with game one set to start at 1:00pm.
