Softball Takes Game Two of Doubleheader against Conference Leading Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville softball team split with the conference leading Penn State-Behrend Lions on Thursday afternoon, falling to the Lions 9-1 in game one and winning game two 3-2.

D'Youville struck first with their lone run of the game coming in the third inning. Talia Wright (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) led off with a single, followed by a single from Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence). Both runners moved into scoring position in the next at-bat, and then Wright would be driven in by Jackie Langer (Wexford, PA/Pine Richland) to bring the score to 1-0.

The final four inning of game one, however, did not go the way of the Spartans. Behrend would score four runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the seventh to go on to win game one 9-1.

Carney led the team with two hits, followed by Langer with one hit and a RBI, Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) recording a hit, and Wright tallying a hit. Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) and Alexis Dymond (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) pitched 3.1 and 3.0 innings respectively, allowing four earned runs each.

Behrend carried their success at the plate over into game two, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first for a quick 2-0. It wasn't until the third inning that D'Youville would get on the board, taking the lead.

Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) laid down a sac-bunt to move Carney to second after a leadoff single. Langer then singled to bring home Carney, cutting the Lion's lead in half. Eventually moving to third, Langer was then driven in by a Meyer single to tie the game. Following a Goodrich double, Meyer would score the go ahead run on a wild pitch to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead.

With great pitched and solid defense, D'Youville was able to fight off a Behrend comeback to defeat the first place Lions 3-2.

Goodrich was outstanding in game two. She pitched 7.0 innings, allowing two earned runs and struck out three. Langer recorded a team high three hits with another RBI and a run scored. Carney followed with two hits while Meyer, Goodrich and Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) each had one.

The next doubleheader for the women comes tomorrow, April 27 as they travel to Pitt.-Greensburg to play at 12:00pm.
