Lions Sweep Spartans in Conference Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Erie, PA – The D'Youville baseball team dropped a conference doubleheader to the Penn State-Behrend Lions on Thursday afternoon, falling 13-2 in game one and 6-5 in game two.

D'Youville struggled at the plate throughout the first game. They fell behind 4-0 after two innings, and then were down 13-0 after five. The Spartans scored a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but it was too late as Behrend took game one 13-2.

Justin Varney (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta), Justin Brackna (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), and Renato Quinones (Amherst, NY/Saint Joe's) each had a hit in the game for the Spartans. Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) and Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) each picked up a RBI. Tyler Siegmann (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) went 6.0 innings on the mound with four strikeouts.

Game two saw a more evenly matched battle between the two teams. The Lions scored four runs in the bottom of the first, but the Spartans then equaled the score in the top of the second.

Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) led off with a triple and then scored on a passed ball. Patrick Mulligan (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) would then walk and move to second on a Hammer walk. That brought Mitchell Mason (Eden, NY/Eden) to the plate and he doubled down the right field line, scoring Mulligan and moving Hammer to third. Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) walked to load the bases and in the next at-bat, Haak singled to score Hammer and Mason would score on an error, tying the game at 4-4.

The Spartans would then go ahead in the fourth with a run. Numan-Ali singled with one out, then stealing second. He would then score two batters later after stealing third and scoring on an error for a 5-4 lead.

However Behrend scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead at 6-5 and would hold onto their lead, winning the game by the same score.

Haak led the team with two hits in the game as Brackna, Macrides, Mulligan, Mason, and Numan-Ali all had hits. Mason and Haak each had a RBI while all five runs came from different players. Haak pitched 8.0 innings in the game, allowing four earned runs and striking out five.

The next doubleheader for the men comes tomorrow, April 27 as they host Pitt.-Greensburg beginning at 1:00pm.
