Women Win Second Half of Doubleheader Behind Langer's Breakout Performance

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Clermont, FL – The D'Youville softball team split their second day of spring training on Friday, falling to the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds 16-0 and defeating the St. Lawrence Saints 9-5.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire was impressive throughout the first game of the day for D'Youville. They pounced early and often and went on to win the game 16-0.

Game two of the day was a much better performance from the Spartans. They began the game with some offense as Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) led off the game with a single. Carney moved to second on a sac-bunt from Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and then she went to third after a Jackie Langer (Wexford, PA/Pine Richland) single. Langer then stole second to put runners on second and third with one out.

Cameron Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) came to the plate and drove in the first run with a single to right center field. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) then grounded out to score Langer, making the score 2-0 D'Youville. For their final run, pitcher Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) helped her own cause with a double to right center, bringing home Colan and giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead.

St. Lawrence scored two in the bottom of the inning to trim their deficit to one, but the Spartans would answer back in the top of the second. Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) reached base on an error to lead off the inning. She would eventually advance to third on another error and get in scoring position. With two outs, Langer came to bat and singled to right field to drive in Meyer and make the score 4-2 before the Saints got the run back in the bottom of the second to bring the score to 4-3.

D'Youville struck again in the fourth inning as Therese Losardo (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) doubled to left with two outs. She then advanced to third in the next at-bat with a Carney single and then scored in the next at-bat as Russo singled, making it a 5-3 Spartan lead. However St. Lawrence would again respond with another run to keep it a one-run game in the bottom of the fourth, making it 5-4.

The Spartans were able to break the game open in the top of the sixth. Meyer led off the inning with a double, followed by Losardo reaching on an error that put runners at second and third. The top of the order then came up with Carney flying out to left to score Meyer and make it 6-4. Russo then came to bat and reached on an error, scoring Losardo and making it 7-4.

To cap off the scoring in the inning, Langer stepped to the plate and belted her first career home run to straightaway center, scoring Russo and bringing the score to 9-5. St. Lawrence had no answer in the bottom of the inning or in the seventh as they went on to win by the final score of 9-5.

Langer had an outstanding day for the women. She led the team in hits and RBI with three each, also scoring two runs and going 3-4 overall. Each player that came to bat for D'Youville recorded at least a hit in the game. Carney recorded two, while all other players besides Langer had one. Both Meyer and Losardo each scored two runs, while Russo drove in two runs.

Picking up her first career win was Goodrich as she struck out four over seven innings and allowed five earned runs. At the plate she went 1-4 with an RBI. In left field, Sierra Belkota (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) played well defensively.

The next par of games for the women comes tomorrow as they play Union at 9:00am and Chicago at 11:30am.
