Williamsville, NY – The D'Youville women's tennis team played their first conference match of the season on Thursday afternoon, losing to the Medaille Mavericks by the final score of 6-3.
D'Youville's top two players, Gillian Wittig (Depew, NY/Depew) and Krista Cornell (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East), played extremely well as both a doubles pairing and singles players. As individuals, Wittig earned a point for the Spartans as the top singles player with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Cornell then picked up another point for D'Youville as the second singles player, winning 6-0, 6-1. The pair then teamed up to take down the top doubles pairing for Medaille 8-3 for the third D'Youville point.
Dena Iadanza (Vestal, NY/Vestal) and Nikki Breton (Alexander, NY/Alexander) played a tight match in the second doubles pairing at 8-4, with both playing well in their singles matches. The third doubles pairing of Morgan Finn (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Vaughnna Bauer (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) fell 8-2, also turning in a solid effort.
The next match for the women comes this Saturday, September 9 as they host Penn State-Altoona at 2:00pm.
