BUFFALO, N.Y. — D'Youville secured a commanding 6-1 victory over the University of the District of Columbia on Friday at Miller Tennis Center.
D'Youville clinched the doubles point and won five of six singles matches to seal the win on Senior Night.
The Saints captured early momentum, winning the doubles point decisively.
Yelizaveta Prokopenko and
Emiliia Soloviova won No. 3 doubles by default. The No. 1 doubles pairing of
Munisa Ashurbekova and
Nele Herbst earned a 6-3 victory over UDC's Polina Zelentsova and Celia Bastin. The sweep was completed at No. 2 doubles, with
Erika Ismailova and
Mina Randjelovic defeating Sofiia Shaparenko and Lina Benjelloun, 6-4.
In singles play, the Saints extended their lead with a win at No. 6 singles, as Prokopenko secured victory by default. Randjelovic added another point at No. 3 singles, overcoming Benjelloun 6-3, 6-1. The Firebirds earned a point at No. 5 singles when Nadja Zmukic defeated Maria Campisi, 6-0, 6-4. However, Herbst clinched the match for D'Youville with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Bastin at No. 2 singles.
The final score was solidified with additional wins for D'Youville. Ismailova triumphed in a hard-fought battle at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7, against Shaparenko. Ashurbekova closed the competition at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over Zelentsova, resulting in a 6-1 final score for the Saints.
D'Youville closes out the season on April 24-25 as they'll travel to Flushing, N.Y. for the East Coast Conference Championships.
