Pair of Late Goals Give Cardinals Win over Spartans

Box Score

Pittsford, NY - The D'Youville men's soccer team suffered a tough come from behind loss on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the St. John Fisher Cardinals by the final score of 2-1.

A majority of the offense in the first half came from St. John Fisher as they outshot the Spartans 7-1. Goalkeeper Peter Petruzzo (Clarence, NY/Clarence) was only tasked with making two saves as the defense in front of him played extremely well to keep the Cardinals off the board. After the first 45 minutes of play, the two teams would remain scoreless at 0-0.

Both teams came out aggressive on offense as the Spartans had two shots on goal within the first four minutes of the second half. The next four shots on goal would come from St. John Fisher before D'Youville would break the scoreless tie with nearly 20 minutes remaining in the game.

In the 68th minute, D'Youville forward Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) scored his second goal of the season after dribbling through the Cardinal defense and striking a ball home into the top left corner of the goal. After grabbing the lead, the Spartan's defense would hold firm, allowing just two shots to get to Petruzzo before the 83rd minute when Fisher would equalize.

The Cardinals scored the game-tying goal with under eight minutes remaining in the game after a quick shot outside the box that went into the side netting of D'Youville's goal. Just under four minutes later, Fisher would take over the lead after a shot from outside the 18-yard box deflected off a D'Youville defender into the back of the goal.

Two late shots from Jason Wilson (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) and Allan Wade (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) were saved or blocked, keeping the Spartans from tying the game. Fisher would hold off D'Youville in the final seconds to win the game 2-1.

D'Youville had a good all-around performance against the Cardinals. Petruzzo made nine saves in the game with his defense playing a solid game in front of him. Of offense, the team had seven total shots, five of which were on goal. Sherman led the team with three shots and a goal. Each one of his shots were on frame as he either scored or forced the keeper to make a save. Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Wilson each had a shot on goal as well.

The next game for the men is their conference opener on Saturday, September 23 as they host La Roche at 1:00pm.
