Evans' Walkoff Gives Spartans Victory over Pitt.-Greenburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville softball team split a pair of conference games on senior day Saturday afternoon, losing game one to the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats 1-0 and winning game two on a walk-off 6-5.

Greensburg scored the lone run of the game in the fifth inning, breaking the scoreless tie on a single to the shortstop. The Bobcat's pitcher was solid all game long allowing a total of two hits to the Spartans in seven innings. She would close out the shutout with three straight groundouts to win the game 1-0.

Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) recorded the only two hits for the Spartans in the game. Purucker and Therese Losardo (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) each earned walks in the game as well. In the circle, Hannah Turek (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) pitched another strong game with one earned run and two strikeouts over seven innings.

In the second game, D'Youville jumped out to an early lead. Carney led off the bottom of the first with a walk and made it to third in the next at-bat. Two batters later, Cameron Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) singled through the left side to score Carney and give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead.

Moving to the second, Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) doubled down the left field line with one out. Losardo then singled to left, scoring Marino and adding another run to the Spartan's lead. A single from Carney moved Losardo to third, with Carney advancing to second on the throw. Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) hit a sac-fly to center, scoring Losardo and making the game 3-0.

The Bobcats answered back with two runs in the top of the third, but D'Youville got a run back in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) came up and blasted her team leading fourth home run of the season to make the game 4-2 after three.

Greensburg would come back in the top of the fifth to score three runs and take the lead at 5-4. In the bottom of the inning, the Spartans answered right back. Turek led off the inning with a single and was moved to second by a sac-bunt by Colan. Two batters later, Purucker singled to center to drive in Turek and tie the game at 5-5.

Down to their last chance before extra innings, Turek hit an infield single and moved to second on an error with one out in the bottom of the seventh. A single from Colan in the next at-bat moved Turek to third with Evans up next. Evans then showcased her power once again by hitting a ball to left center deep enough to score Turek on a sac-fly, giving the Spartans a 6-5 walk-off win.

Evans led the team with two huge RBI in the game, including the game-tying and game-winning RBI. Turek and Colan each collected two hits each, with five other players recording a hit.

Turek also picked up the win in the game after coming into relieve starter Alexis Dymond (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West). Dymond went 4.0 innings and allowed two earned runs to start, with Turek coming in for the win with three strikeouts over three innings. Sierra Belkota (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) saw time in left field in each game.

The next pair of game for the women comes on Monday, April 24 as they play Medaille. Games are scheduled for 3 and 5pm.
