Spartans Get Big Win Against AMCC's Best Team

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville softball team took down the conference's top team on Friday afternoon, defeating the Penn State-Altoona Lions 3-1 in game one and falling in game two 7-0.

D'Youville was the first team to take the lead, and they would do so in the second inning. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) led off the inning with a single, followed by a sac-bunt from Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint). Cameron Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) then singled to put two runners on base. The fourth batter of the inning, Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) would double to right center field to score Evans and Colan, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead.

Altoona would respond with a run in the top of the next inning, but D'Youville would get that run back. In the bottom of the fifth, Therese Losardo (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) led off with a walk. Tow batters later, Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) tripled down the left field line to score Losardo and take a 3-1 lead.

The three runs, combined with outstanding pitching and defense, were enough to hold the first place Lions at bay as the Spartans would go on to win the game 3-1.

Hannah Turek (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) was outstanding in the pitcher's circle, pitching a complete game over 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run and struck out six. At he plate, Turek also added a hit. Colan led the team with two hits, while Gawlak led the team with two RBI.

Game number two of the day began with the Lions taking the lead 1-0 in the top of the first. Altoona then added three runs in each of the third and fourth innings to go up 7-0. The Spartans had several chances with runners on base, but were unable to get a run across and would lose the game 7-0.

Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) picked up two hits, tied with Turek and Losardo for the team lead. Alexis Dymond (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) got the start, going 7.0 innings. Sierra Belkota (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint), Maddie Jacobs (Lake View, NY/Frontier) and Rachele Anello (Buffalo, NY/Charter) each saw plate appearances in the doubleheader.

D'Youville will play their next doubleheader on Tuesday, April 18 as the women host Alfred State at 3 and 5pm.
