Spartans Punch Ticket to AMCC Playoffs with Victory over Barons

Steubenville, OH – The D'Youville women's volleyball team is going to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoffs for the second straight season after defeating the Franciscan Barons by the final score of 3-1 on Saturday.

Franciscan came out of the gate in the first set and played the Spartans close. The Barons were tied with D'Youville 9-9 before taking a 12-10 lead. Then tied at 17-17, Franciscan went back up by taking a 22-18 lead. D'Youville would not surrender the set quietly as they tied it 23-23 late, but the Barons went on to win the first set 25-23.

In the second set, the Barons would again get out to an early lead over the Spartans. Trailing 10-8, D'Youville came back to take a 15-13 lead before Franciscan would go up by one at 21-20. However D'Youville would take the lead right back to score the next five points and win the second set 25-21.

The Spartans would take a 5-3 lead in the third set before Franciscan would take it back at 7-5. D'Youville then came back to retake the lead and go up 15-10 over the Barons. They extended their lead to 18-13 but Franciscan scored seven unanswered points for a 20-18 lead. Not allowing themselves to get any further behind, D'Youville scored seven of the next eight points to win the third set 25-21.

Looking hold off D'Youville from winning the match, Franciscan took a 6-3 lead in the fourth set before the Spartans went ahead 14-9.  The women held onto their comfortable lead before Franciscan pulled to within two at 21-19. However, D'Youville was able to hold off the late charging Barons and defeated Franciscan 25-21, winning the match 3-1.

D'Youville had four players with double-digit kills in the match. Both Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) and Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) had 12 to lead the team. Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) and Samantha Murray (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) each had 11 to add to the team's offense. Schneider also recorded a double-double as she recorded 11 digs to go with her 12 kills.

Alexandra Bubar (Wilson, NY/Wilson) had a team high 23 digs while Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led the team with 24 assists. McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) added 19 assists while Lauren Conley (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) had seven kills and Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) contributing eight digs.

The women will travel to La Roche this coming Wednesday, November 1 for their first-round playoff matchup against the Redhawks. Match time is 7:00pm.
