Second Straight Sherman Hat-Trick Puts Spartans in Playoff Position

Box Score

Altoona, PA – The D'Youville men's soccer team won their third consecutive game on Saturday afternoon by defeating the Penn State-Altoona Lions by the final score of 3-0.

Sophomore forward Hunter Sherman (Lockport, NY/Lockport) picked up right where he left off in the previous game on Wednesday against Hilbert. Sherman found the back of the net on just his second shot of the game off a feed from Bryce Humphrey (Syracuse, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius), giving D'Youville the lead in the ninth minute.

Altoona began to settle in on offense, recording five shots over the next twenty minutes compared to the zero from the Spartans. However the next shot for D'Youville came off the foot of their top goalscorer and it again found the back of the net to double the Spartan lead. Jake Kowalewski (Attica, NY/Attica) picked up his third assist of the season in the 29th minute as he found Sherman who dribbled through the Lion's defense and scored his second of the game.

Each team would increase their shot totals throughout the remainder of the half, but neither team would be able to put a shot past the opposing keeper. After 45 minutes, D'Youville led Altoona 2-0.

As quickly as he scored to begin the game, Sherman scored even faster to begin the second half. Just under six minutes after the whistle to start the half, Sherman completed his hat-trick by dribbling along the end line and maneuvering around the Altoona goalie for a 3-0 Spartan lead.

The two teams would combine for 16 shots throughout the remainder of the half, but neither would alter the score any further. Both defenses would hold firm but not after the D'Youville offense did their damage as final horn would sound with the Spartans defeating the Lions 3-0.

Sherman led the offense in the game with his second consecutive hat-trick in the win as Kowalewski picked up his team leading third assist and Humphrey grabbed his first of the season. Alf Egge (Stavanger, Norway/Stavanger International) was second on the team with four shots and Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) added two.

In goal, Kyle Dick (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Peter Petruzzo (Clarence, NY/Clarence) each played a half as they shared a four-save shutout. On defense, Hammer, Matt Davis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), Mike Lekanka (Newfane, NY/Newfane), AJ Wade (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint), and Aweso Noor (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) each played key roles in the team's shutout.

The next game for the men comes this Tuesday, October 24 as they host the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers in their final regular season game. If the Spartans win, they clinch a playoff berth. Game time for the regular-season finale is 5:00pm.
