Softball Takes Game One of Doubleheader Before Rain Halts Play

Box Score

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville softball team continued their current conference winning streak, defeating the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers 10-2 Wednesday afternoon before the rain halted the doubleheader.

Pitt.-Bradford put the first run in the top of the inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Spartans would respond in in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) reached first on an error by the shortstop and then advanced to second. Next up, Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) also reached on an error and then took second, scoring Monin to tie the game at 1-1. Two batters later, Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) singled and moved Evans to third. Back-to-back singles from Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) and MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Alabama, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) would score Evans and Turek to give D'Youville a 3-1 lead after the first inning.

In the top of the second, the Panthers would come back with a run of their own to make the game 3-2. D'Youville would add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead.

Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) walked with one out in the inning. Monin then reached on an error yet again and with Lauren DeVantier (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) walking two batters later to load the bases. Turek singled in the next at-bat to drive in Gawlak and then pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) was hit by a pitch to drive in Monin, making the game 5-2.

The Spartans would add to their run total in the next inning. Kehlenbeck led off the inning with a double and was moved to third on a sac-bunt from Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island). Gawlak was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat and then stole second.

Monin then singled up the middle, scoring both Kehlenbeck and Gawlak to increase the lead to 7-2. Next, Evans doubled to right center and scored Monin. Two batters later, Turek got her second RBI of the game with a single up the middle, scoring Evans. McHenry then singled and stole second, with Turek stealing third.

Purucker then came to bat, reaching on an error and scoring Turek to end the game. D'Youville's eight-run lead would be enough to end the game after five innings and the Spartans took game one from the Panthers 10-2.

McHenry won her fifth consecutive game of the season with her fifth consecutive complete game. In five innings, Kalie allowed no earned runs and struck out one, allowing three hits. At the plate, she had one hit and one RBI.

Continuing her recent tear, Turek led the team with three hits. Her two RBI were tied with Monin, Evans and Purucker. Monin led the team with three runs while Evans, Turek and Gawlak each scored two.

Game two of the doubleheader that was rained out on Wednesday will be rescheduled. The Spartans will travel to St. John Fisher tomorrow to play the Cardinals at 3/5pm.
