Box Score 2 Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville baseball team hosted Pitt.-Bradford at Coca-Cola Field on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Panthers in a doubleheader by the scores of 3-1 and 6-2.
Game one began with the Spartans taking an early lead. With one out, freshman Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) tripled to right center. The next batter, Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) would ground out to second, scoring Haak for the 1-0 lead.
Senior pitcher Dan Fox (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) was dealing early on. Through three innings, Fox had failed to allow a hit and struck out seven, including the side in the top of the third.
The Panthers would pounce late as they scored all three of their runs in the top of the sixth. Their 3-1 lead would last throughout the remainder of the game and Bradford would defeat D'Youville by the final of 3-1.
All five hits the Spartans had were by five different players. Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) and Haak each had triples, with Critelli picking up the lone RBI. Fox pitched a complete game, striking out a career high 11 batters.
Game two saw Bradford get on the board first for an early lead. The Panthers scored two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead. D'Youville would come back in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit in half.
Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) reached second on an error from the Bradford third baseman with one out. Next up, Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) singled, moving Macrides to third. Then, Nick Stimpfel (Aquebogue, NY/Riverhead) came to bat and hit a sac-fly to center to drive in Macrides and bring the score to 2-1.
Bradford would get their two-run lead back in the top of the second with a scored run, making the game 3-1. They would then add two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth for a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the eight, Stimpfel and Macrides would again combine for a D'Youville run. Macrides led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, Stimpfel would single and Macrides would come around to score on an error from the Bradford second baseman, making the game 6-2. The Spartans were unable to come back and would fall in game two by the final of 6-2.
Stimpfel led the team with three hits and an RBI, with Macrides scoring both of the runs. Freshman pitcher Tyler Goodridge (Lockport, NY/Lockport) turned in another strong outing, going seven innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out two. Kevin Kabacinski (Buffalo, NY/St. Joe's) came in for two innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two with no runs.
The men will travel to Rochester on Thursday, April 21st to play a one, nine-inning game against the University of Rochester at 7pm.
