Box Score 2 Pittsburgh, PA – The D'Youville baseball team fell to the conference leading La Roche Redhawks Sunday afternoon with losses by the scores of 16-1 in game one and 14-1 in game two.
D'Youville took the lead early in game one with Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) leading off the inning with a single to right field. Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) then walked, moving Macrides to second. Next up, Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) grounded to third, moving the two runners over. In the next at-bat, Macrides would score from third on a passed ball giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
The undefeated Redhawks would then respond in a huge way, scoring 14 runs in the bottom of the second to take a 14-1 lead. They would add runs in the bottom of the third and fifth extending their lead to 16-1 and go on to win game one by the same score.
Michael LiPani (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) led the team in hits with three. Pitcher Steve Vik (Hopkins, SC/Lower Richland) picked up the loss while Will Pack (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) went 4.1 innings in relief.
La Roche would begin the scoring in game two with two runs in the top of the second. D'Youville would cut the lead in half in the top of the third, with LiPani leading off the inning with a single. Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) moved LiPani to second on a sac-bunt. Two batters later, Nick Stimpfel (Aquebogue, NY/Riverhead) doubled to center, scoring LiPani to bring the deficit to 2-1.
The Redhawks would add eight runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings to make the game 10-1. They then added four more runs in the seventh and eighth innings to bring the game to 14-1 and would go on to win with that score.
Stimpfel had a team high two hits, followed by one each from LiPani and Louis Reynolds (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame). Tyler Goodridge (Lockport, NY/Lockport) pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing one hit and no runs. Senior Brian Mattina-Chmiel (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) also made relief going one inning, allowing one hit and one earned run.
The men will return home for their next pair of games on Tuesday, April 12th at 2 and 4:30pm. The games will be played at the University at Buffalo.
