Box Score 2 Winter Haven, FL – The D'Youville baseball team fell to the Maine-Farmington Beavers on Friday afternoon in a doubleheader, losing the first game 16-8 and losing the second game 9-1.
Maine-Farmington took a commanding lead early on in the game, scoring two runs in the first inning for a 2-0 lead. The Beavers would add four runs in the next three innings to increase their lead to 6-0 over the Spartans.
D'Youville would get a few runs to cross the plate in the bottom of the fourth to cut down the deficit. Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) led off the inning with a single to left field with Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) then reaching on a fielder's choice. Next up, Kevin Kabacinksi (Buffalo, NY/St. Joe's) reached third on an error by the pitcher, scoring Macrides and Hammer. In the next at-bat, Nick Stimpfel (Aquebogue, NY/Riverhead) pinch hit and drove in Kabacinski from third, cutting the deficit in half and the Spartans trailed 6-3.
The Beavers would strike back in the bottom of the fourth and make up for the runs they surrendered. The team scored six runs on four hits and two errors and increased their lead to 12-3.
Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Spartans got back on the board in the sixth. Kabacinski led off the inning with a single, followed by a double from Stimpfel and a walk to Michael LiPani (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit). Following the first out of the inning, Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) singled to left field, driving in Kabacinski.
Next up, Thomas Brummer (Amherst, NY/St. Joe's) cleared the bases with a triple, scoring LiPani, Stimpfel and Haak. Two batters later, Macrides hit a sac-fly to center, scoring Brummer. The inning would end with D'Youville scoring five runs and pulled to within reach of the Beavers, trailing 12-8.
As they did in the top of the fifth, Maine-Farmington answered the Spartan's big inning with one of their own. The Beavers scored four runs in the top of the seventh and went on to win the game by the score of 16-8.
Brummer led the team with three hits and three RBI, followed by two hits from Stimpfel. Dan Fox (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) picked up the loss in 4.1 innings of work, allowing three earned runs and striking out three.
The second game of the day between the two teams resulted in the same outcome. Maine-Farmington would have a massive first inning, scoring eight runs for an 8-0 lead.
D'Youville would get a run back in the top of the second after Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) singled in Hammer from second, making the game 8-1. The Beavers added a run in the bottom of the fifth and would go on to win the game by the final of 9-1.
Stimpfel continued his hot hitting by leading the team with two hits in the game. Critelli drove in the team's only run and three Spartans each had a hit. Tyler Goodridge (Lockport, NY/Lockport) was strong after pitching 5.1 innings of relief, allowing one earned run and struck out two batters.
The men will return home to Buffalo for their next pair of games as they host Medaille on Wednesday March 30th at McCarthy Park. The doubleheader will begin at 1pm.
