Spartans Keep Rolling to Third Straight Win

Erie, PA - The D'Youville women's volleyball team continued to climb the conference standings with two more wins on Saturday afternoon, defeating the La Roche Redhawks 3-1 and the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats 3-0.

In the first match of the day, the Spartans squared off against the Redhawks. After the first set was tied at 10-10, La Roche pulled out ahead of D'Youville and would end up winning 25-16. In the second set, the two teams were again tied at 10-10, and then again at 15-15. After falling behind 19-17, the Redhawks would come back to take a 24-23 lead over the D'Youville. However, the Spartans would outscore La Roche 4-1 and win the second set 27-25.

Following their first set win of the match, D'Youville came out firing in the third, taking a 9-0 lead. They would extend their lead to 19-5 and continue their domination to the end, winning the third set 25-10. The fourth set was more tightly contested between the two teams. Tied at 13-13, D'Youville took at 17-13 lead. They would hold a 24-22 advantage until La Roche tied it up at 24. The Redhawks then took a 26-25 lead, but D'Youville came back to win the fourth set 28-26 and win the match 3-1.

Junior Megan Schneider (Lockport, NY/Lockport) continued her recent tear, leading the team with 14 kills. Behind her, also coming into the match performing at a high level, was Kendyll Smith (Petrolia, PA/Karns City) with 12 kills. Savannah Brayton (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) led the team with four service aces, adding nine digs. Jasmine Filkov (North Collins, NY/North Collins) had a team high 19 digs.

Against the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats in the second match of the day, the two teams were tied 7-7 early in the first set. The Spartans would then go on to outscore the Bobcats 10-3, and then push their lead to 21-14. D'Youville would then close out the first set, winning 25-16.

D'Youville once again took a sizable lead in the second set of the match. Up 13-6, they then built up their lead to 19-10, and then to 25-12, winning the match by that score. The third set was much of the same. After trailing 7-4 to Greensburg, D'Youville came back to take a 14-7 lead. They again extended their dominance throughout the remainder of the match, winning by 25-17 and the match 3-0,

Tying for the team lead in kills was Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) with 10. Filknov had 19 digs for the second straight match, leading the team once again. McKenna Cartonia (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) added 12 assists in the match, trailing Abby Booth (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) who had a team high 15. 

The next match for the women will come on Tuesday, October 18th as the team travels to Medaille to play the Mavericks at 7pm.
